The planting of seedlings on a tract can help to insure your timberland investment continues at maximum sustainability and growth rates. Artificial reforestation allows the timbered stand to be harvested sooner than with natural regeneration. Seedlings are planted on a defined spacing, whereas natural regeneration is simply allowing the stand to regenerate with whatever grows naturally. Artificially reforested stands can typically be harvested beginning at 15 years old, where a naturally regenerated stand will need to be 17 to 18 years old before the first thinning operation can be conducted.
